Cambridge A-Level Computer Science Tuition Online (9618)

Cambridge 9618 Computer Science: theory, pseudocode and data structures, and the practical programming paper at A Level.

Afterkelas teaches Cambridge International AS & A Level Computer Science (9618) online to pre-university students in Malaysia. Tutors teach live in English, 1-to-1 or in small groups, across the theory papers, problem-solving in pseudocode and the practical programming paper.

What Cambridge 9618 covers

The AS and A Level topics of the 9618 syllabus. Several A Level topics, such as data representation and system software, extend AS topics with the same names.

AS Level

12 topics
  1. Information representation
  2. Communication
  3. Hardware
  4. Processor fundamentals
  5. System software
  6. Security, privacy and data integrity
  7. Ethics and ownership
  8. Databases
  9. Algorithm design and problem-solving
  10. Data types and structures
  11. Programming
  12. Software development

A Level

8 topics
  1. Data representation
  2. Communication and internet technologies
  3. Hardware and virtual machines
  4. System software
  5. Security
  6. Artificial intelligence
  7. Computational thinking and problem-solving
  8. Further programming

Pseudocode and problem-solving

Paper 2 asks students to design and write algorithms in Cambridge's pseudocode, use arrays, records and files, and trace and correct code. Students who program confidently in a real language still lose marks by not following the pseudocode conventions or by missing part of a requirement, so tutors practise writing to the conventions and checking each requirement as it is met.

At A Level, problem-solving extends to recursion, abstract data types such as stacks, queues and linked lists, and searching and sorting algorithms, which students need to write, trace and compare.

Theory and the practical paper

The theory papers cover data representation, networks, hardware, processors, system software, security, databases and, at A Level, artificial intelligence. Precision earns the marks: a definition that is roughly right usually earns nothing.

Paper 4 is a practical paper in which students write and test programs at a computer. It rewards fluency built over time, so tutors set short programming tasks throughout the course and timed practice closer to the exam.

Who teaches A-Level Computer Science

Tutors are university students and graduates with strong results in computing, screened before they teach, and matched to the 9618 syllabus and exam series. Classes use the programming language the school teaches.

A question, worked through

A 9618-style binary search trace. Recording low, high and mid at each step keeps the trace accurate and earns the method marks.

Question

Trace a binary search for the value 42 in the sorted array [3, 8, 15, 21, 34, 42, 57], indexed from 0. How many comparisons are made?

  1. Start with low = 0 and high = 6. mid = (0 + 6) ÷ 2 = 3, and the value at index 3 is 21.
  2. 42 is greater than 21, so the target is in the upper half: low = mid + 1 = 4.
  3. mid = (4 + 6) ÷ 2 = 5, and the value at index 5 is 42, which matches.
  4. Two comparisons were made with array values, at indexes 3 and 5.

Answer 42 is found at index 5 after two comparisons.

Frequently asked questions

Does my child need IGCSE Computer Science first?

It helps but is not required. Students new to programming spend the first weeks on algorithms and basic programming before the AS theory topics.

Which programming language is used?

The written papers use Cambridge pseudocode, and the practical paper uses one of the languages Cambridge permits for that series. Classes use the language the school teaches.

How is it different from IGCSE Computer Science?

A Level goes much deeper: abstract data types, recursion, processor architecture, and a practical programming paper at the full A Level.

How much does Cambridge A-Level Computer Science tuition cost?

The fee depends on the format (1-to-1 or a small group), how many classes a week and the tutor, so there is no single figure. Send an academic advisor the papers the student is entered for, the exam series and the programming language used at school on WhatsApp, and you will get the current packages and a quote, usually within one working day.
