Edexcel IGCSE Business Tuition Online (4BS1)
Pearson Edexcel Business, with every topic applied to a small business on Paper 1 and a large one on Paper 2.
Afterkelas teaches Pearson Edexcel International GCSE Business (4BS1) online to students at international and private schools in Malaysia. Tutors matched to the specification teach live in English, 1-to-1 or in small groups, across all five topics and both papers.
What Edexcel IGCSE Business covers
The five topics of the 4BS1 specification. Both papers draw on all five; what changes is the size of the business the questions are about.
Topics (4BS1)
5 topics- Business activity and influences on business
- People in business
- Business finance
- Marketing
- Business operations
Small business, large business
The two papers examine the same topics through different businesses. Paper 1 is about small businesses with a local market, where the owner makes most decisions and cash flow can decide survival. Paper 2 is about large businesses with national or global markets, where questions turn to organisational structure, economies of scale and the effect of decisions across countries.
Answers have to fit the business. Recommending a national advertising campaign for a two-person café, or ignoring shareholders when discussing a multinational, costs the application marks. Tutors practise both scales so students learn which ideas fit where.
Calculations and justified decisions
Both papers include calculations: cash flow, break-even, profit, margins and percentage changes. They follow fixed methods and should be dependable marks once practised.
The final question on each paper asks students to make and justify a decision, such as which of two options a business should choose. These reward analysis of both options in context and a conclusion that explains what the decision depends on.
Who teaches Edexcel IGCSE Business
Tutors are university students and graduates, screened before they teach, and matched to the 4BS1 specification and exam series. An academic advisor asks for a recent test, since it shows whether marks go missing in application, calculation or evaluation.
A question, worked through
A 4BS1-style cash-flow question of the kind Paper 1 sets for small businesses. The second month shows why the forecast matters before the money runs out.
Question
A small bakery starts March with $2,000 in the bank. In March, cash inflows are $8,000 and outflows $9,500. In April, inflows are $6,000 and outflows $7,000. (a) Calculate the closing balance for each month. (b) What does the forecast suggest the owner should do?
- March net cash flow = inflows − outflows = $8,000 − $9,500 = −$1,500.
- March closing balance = opening balance + net cash flow = $2,000 − $1,500 = $500.
- April opens with $500. Net cash flow = $6,000 − $7,000 = −$1,000, so April closes at $500 − $1,000 = −$500.
- A negative balance means the bakery cannot pay its bills from cash. The owner should arrange an overdraft in advance, or delay a payment or chase customers who owe money, before April.
Answer (a) March $500; April −$500. (b) Arrange an overdraft or improve cash flow before April, since the business will otherwise run out of cash.
Frequently asked questions
Why are there separate papers for small and large businesses?
Because the right answer depends on the size of the business. The same topic, marketing or finance, leads to different decisions for a local shop and for a multinational, and the papers test whether students can tell the difference.
My child knows the content but loses marks. Why?
Usually because answers are not applied to the business in the question, or decisions are given without justification. Both improve quickly with marked practice on past-style questions.
How is it different from Cambridge IGCSE Business Studies?
The content overlaps, but Edexcel organises the papers by business size and grades 9 to 1, while Cambridge 0450 has a short-answer paper and a case-study paper graded A* to G.
How much does Edexcel IGCSE Business tuition cost?
The fee depends on the format (1-to-1 or a small group), how many classes a week and the tutor, so there is no single figure. Send an academic advisor the exam series and a recent test on WhatsApp, and you will get the current packages and a quote, usually within one working day.
