Equations, units and working
Edexcel Physics expects students to recall many equations and use others from a list. Calculation marks are lost on small things: an equation not written before substituting, a unit missing or wrong, a value in grams used where kilograms were needed. Tutors set out every calculation the same way until the routine is automatic.
Explanations lose marks by being vague. A question on why a stretched wire's resistance rises, or why a satellite stays in orbit, wants the specific physics idea stated plainly, and tutors teach the vocabulary each explanation needs.
Practical skills inside the written papers
Edexcel has no separate practical exam. Instead, the written papers ask about the required practicals: planning an investigation, identifying variables, reading results tables, drawing a graph and explaining sources of error. Students who never did these experiments at school still meet the questions, so tutors teach each practical's method and the questions it generates.
Physics or Science (Double Award)
Schools enter students for the full Physics award or for Science (Double Award), which covers Biology, Chemistry and Physics in less depth. Double Award candidates sit only the Paper 1 of each science, so Paper 2 content is not on their papers. Check the entry before the first class so the tutor plans for the right papers.
A question, worked through
A 4PH1-style electricity question. Each part uses one equation, and the fuse choice in part (b) is where students lose the mark by picking the closest value.
Question
A kettle is rated at 2.3 kW and runs on the 230 V mains supply. (a) Calculate the current in the kettle. (b) Choose a suitable fuse from 3 A, 5 A and 13 A. (c) Calculate the energy transferred in 3 minutes.
- Power = current × voltage, so I = P ÷ V = 2300 W ÷ 230 V = 10 A.
- The fuse must be rated just above the normal current, so it does not melt in normal use but does in a fault: 13 A. A 5 A fuse would melt every time the kettle was switched on.
- Energy = power × time, with time in seconds: 3 minutes = 180 s, so E = 2300 W × 180 s = 414 000 J.
- Give the unit and a sensible form: 414 000 J, or 414 kJ.

Is there a practical exam in Edexcel IGCSE Physics?
No. Practical skills are tested inside the written papers through questions on the required practicals, so students need to know each method, its variables and its sources of error even without a lab exam.
What is the difference between Physics and Science (Double Award)?
The full Physics award covers all of the 4PH1 content across two papers. Double Award covers all three sciences, and its candidates sit only Paper 1 of each, so the Paper 2 content is not examined for them.
How is Edexcel different from Cambridge IGCSE Physics?
The physics overlaps, but Edexcel sets two papers graded 9 to 1 with practical skills inside them, while Cambridge 0625 has Core and Extended tiers and a separate practical or Alternative to Practical paper.
